Hook & Eye Tape

Hook and eye tape is a fastener that is made of two parts, each sewn to their respective pieces of fabric, one with a hook and one with a eye. To secure a garment, the hook is put into the eye. Hook and eye closures are common in bras and corsets. It can also be used for dresses, jackets and cloaks.

How to Sew Hook & Eye Tape

Your hook and eye will arrive flat. Separate the eye from the hooks.

The hooks are applied to the right hand side of the bra, the eyes to the left side.

Lay the hook and eye beside the bra back and measure the exact width that you need.

Mark the tape and cut to width.

The eye side has a flap which will slip over the raw edge of the bra back. You can sew this to the bra with either a straight stitch as shown, or a small zig zag stitch. Both stitches are used in ready to wear. Finish the edges of the hook and eye tape to prevent fraying. Again, a small straight stitch, or zig zag stitch is acceptable.

The hook side is folded over the raw edge. The hooks face down, towards the inside.

Finish the raw edges the same as above. Lay the hooks down, and place the raw edge of the bra up to the fold line. Pin and flip the bra over in order to sew along the edge of the hook tape. This can be tricky as some machines will not want to sew over the hooks. There are notions made for sewing over thick hems, which can be slipped under your sewing foot to even it out, (I use a sewing machine needle case). Sew this side then flip the bra back over. Fold the tape over the raw edge and sew through all thicknesses.

You have now applied your hook and eye!
