How to Sew Underwire Channeling
Read your pattern instruction sheet carefully as there are 2 different ways to sew on underwire channeling, depending on the style of bra you are sewing. It will make a difference in the fit if it is not applied correctly! The 2 styles are full band bra, where the band is continuous from the back through the front under the cups. The bridge between the cups is attached to the band. In this style, the channelling is turned to the outside of the cups, so it lies on the band. This is the style illustrated here. The other style does not have the band running under the cups, and the channelling is therefore turned into the cups. Read your instructions before sewing!

The underwire channelling has a right side – it is identified by the stitching. On one side it is straight stitch, on the other , it appears chained. Although it really won’t make a difference, for neatness, the straight stitch side is the right side. Using a very tiny zig zag stitch, close off one end of each piece of channelling. The other end will be closed off after the wires have been inserted. If you are not using wires you can close off both ends now.

On the inside of the bra, flip the cup seam allowance out, so you will be sewing on the seam allowance only. Place the chainstitched line of stitching on the channelling, over your cup seam line.

Using the stitching on the channelling as your guide, stitch the channelling onto the seam allowance. The channelling is bias, so it will follow the curve easily. Sew slowly keeping the stitching lines over each other, and the seam allowance free.

Turn the bra to the outside. Making sure that the channelling is flipped to the band side ( and not inwards towards the cups) topstitch close to the seam, through all thicknesses. I increase the stitch length by 1 to 1.5 from my regular stitch to do the topstitching. I also use a stitch-in-the-ditch foot, or edge - joining foot to help keep my stitching straight.

You will then sew a second row of stitching along the outside edge of the channelling, which should be parallel to the first row.

You have now applied underwire channelling!
